Small and Medium-Scale Mining: An Opportunity to Drive Investment and Growth in Peru
Peru is a nation blessed with extraordinary mineral wealth. However, I believe one of our greatest challenges is ensuring that this potential is transformed into new investments, productive businesses, jobs and economic development across the country's regions.
For years, international markets have focused primarily on large mining projects. However, there is also a sector of small and medium-sized entrepreneurs who have invested their own resources in mining concessions, geological studies, exploration, diamond drilling and sample analyses conducted by internationally accredited laboratories.
The Role of Government in Promoting Investment
From my business perspective, the Peruvian government, through the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM), could strengthen mechanisms to connect technically supported small and medium-sized mining projects with national and international investors.
This does not necessarily mean that the government should directly finance these projects, but rather facilitate their presentation to investment funds, specialized companies, strategic partners and private investors interested in developing Peru's mineral resources.
Mining Entrepreneurs Also Contribute to Nation-Building
Behind many mining projects are Peruvian entrepreneurs who have taken risks, invested their own assets and worked for years to develop opportunities that still require capital to move forward.
Peru's economic growth does not depend solely on large investments. It also depends on the ability of its entrepreneurs to transform resources and knowledge into sustainable businesses.
A Vision for the Future
MINEM already has initiatives to promote mining exploration and investment projects. The next challenge is to expand opportunities for connecting with private capital, including smaller companies that demonstrate technical progress and suitable conditions for development.
Peru has natural resources, enterprising business leaders and a strategic position in the international minerals market. The challenge is to connect this potential with responsible investment and real opportunities for growth.
A Vision for the Future
I am convinced that strengthening formal small and medium-scale mining can help build a more dynamic, decentralized and competitive economy.
Peru's mining future is also built by providing opportunities to those who have already begun investing, exploring and developing projects in our country.
